Admissions Requirements

GPA

It is expected that applicants to this program will have a minimum GPA of 2.7 (A = 4.0). However, please note that the Global Studies program requires that students study abroad for one semester; as most study abroad programs now require a minimum GPA of 3.0, it is highly recommended that your GPA be approaching that level. If your GPA is under 3.0, please contact LAS Global Studies to consult with an advisor (globalstudies@illinois.edu).

Admissions Recommendations

Coursework

Although it isn’t required that you do so in order to be admitted, we also highly recommend that you complete transfer coursework equivalent to the following University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign courses before or during the term you’re submitting your application:

  • RHET 105,Writing & Research (at most institutions, the equivalent requires a two-course English composition sequence)

Additionally, completion of exact course equivalents for some of the following University of Illinois is recommended for transfer, as they complete the interdisciplinary core course requirement for the major. To learn more about all of the core course options, please refer to the program website.

  • ANTH 230,Sociocultural Anthropology
  • HIST 258,20th C World to Midcentury
    • or HIST 259, 20th C World from Midcentury
  • PS 241,Comp Politics in Dev Nations
    • or PS 280, Intro to International Relations
  • SOC 270,Global Demography

Prospective transfer students are encouraged and welcome to contact Global studies at globalstuides@illinois.edu for further guidance in choosing coursework because of the individualized nature of the major.


Graduation Requirements

To graduate, all students are required to complete at least 45 semester hours of credit at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. At least 21 of these credit hours must be at the 300 or 400 level.

General Education Courses

Included in our graduation requirements are general education (gen ed) courses. These classes allow you to gain and use broad knowledge beyond the specialized learning you’ll do through your major. Learn more about our general education requirements. You may be able to use Transferology to find gen ed courses that will transfer over from your institution to Illinois.

Language Other than English

Although this program doesn’t require you to complete our language graduation requirement for admission, we strongly encourage you do so before transferring.

Global Studies requires at least 6 credits of advanced language coursework beyond the LAS
minimum graduation requirement. Transfer students must take the appropriate language
placement tests before registering for classes and should ideally be taking language courses at their
current institution prior to transfer. Study abroad locations and regional focus within the major are
based on the student’s language used for the major.
