Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering

Admissions Requirements

Please note that transfer applicants who have completed more than 6 semesters or 80 hours of coursework are subject to an additional review. Priority is given to students who can complete degree requirements within a total of ten semesters in college (not counting summer sessions).

GPA

It is expected that applicants to this program will have a minimum GPA of 3.2 (A = 4.0).

Coursework

Students With Fewer Than 50 Transferable Credit Hours at Time of Application

If you’ll apply to Illinois with fewer than 50 transferable credit hours, you must complete transfer coursework equivalent to the following University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign courses before or during the term you’re submitting your application:

  • CHEM 202, Accelerated Chemistry I
    • and CHEM 203, Accelerated Chemistry Lab I
  • CHEM 204, Accelerated Chemistry II
    • and CHEM 205, Accelerated Chemistry Lab II
  • MATH 220, Calculus
  • MATH 231, Calculus II
  • PHYS 211, University Physics: Mechanics

Students who have taken a non-accelerated general chemistry sequence will enroll in CHEM 222, Quantitative Analysis Lecture and CHEM 223, Quantitative Analysis Lab, after transferring.

Depending on the available courses, the 3-semester sequence in calculus and analytic geometry, including basic linear algebra and matrix theory, should be equivalent to at least 12 semester hours. Additionally, the most advanced physics sequence or the one for engineering majors must be followed. If no 3-semester, 12-hour sequence is available for engineering majors, a 2-semester, 10-hour sequence may also be acceptable, provided it includes modern physics.

Students With 50 or More Transferable Credit Hours at Time of Application

In addition to the above courses, if you’ll apply to Illinois with 50 or more transferable credit hours, you must complete transfer coursework equivalent to the following University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign courses before or during the term you’re submitting your application:

  • MATH 241, Calculus III
  • PHYS 212, University Physics: Elec & Mag

Due to the specialized nature of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering curriculum, Junior-level transfer students typically require a total of five or six semesters on our campus to be graduated. We believe that this extra semester or two is a worthwhile investment if it maximizes your opportunity for success, and our experience strongly suggests that it does.

Admissions Recommendations

Coursework

Although it isn’t required that you do so in order to be admitted, we also highly recommend that you complete transfer coursework equivalent to the following University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign courses before or during the term you’re submitting your application:

  • CHEM 236, Fundamental Organic Chem I
  • CHEM 237, Structure and Synthesis
  • CHEM 436, Fundamental Organic Chem II
  • CS 101, Intro Computing: Engrg & Sci
  • MATH 285, Intro Differential Equations
  • MATH 415, Applied Linear Algebra
  • PHYS 214, Univ Physics: Quantum Physics
  • RHET 105, Writing and Research (at most institutions, the equivalent requires a two-course English composition sequence)
  • Humanities & the Arts
  • Social & Behavioral Sciences

Sixteen hours of approved general education electives are required. This must include at least six hours in Social Sciences or Behavioral Sciences and at least six hours in Literature and the Arts or Historical and Philosophical perspectives. A current list of approved courses that may be used to satisfy this general education requirement is available on the Undergraduate Program in Chemical Engineering website. If you have more than six hours in either category, the excess will be counted as other Humanities or Social Science hours.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate, all students are required to complete at least 45 semester hours of credit at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. At least 21 of these credit hours must be at the 300 or 400 level.

General Education Courses

Included in our graduation requirements are general education (gen ed) courses. These classes allow you to gain and use broad knowledge beyond the specialized learning you’ll do through your major. Learn more about our general education requirements. You may be able to use Transferology to find gen ed courses that will transfer over from your institution to UIUC.

Language Other than English

Although this program doesn’t require you to complete our language graduation requirement for admission, we strongly encourage you do so before transferring.
