Physics

If you’re interested in completing a major, including a dual degree, in The Grainger College of Engineering, you must apply and be admitted directly into the college at time of transfer. Transfer students entering other colleges on campus are not eligible for later admission/on-campus transfer to Grainger Engineering, including Engineering Undeclared.

Admissions Requirements

Admission to Grainger Engineering is competitive, and not all qualified applicants are accepted. If you are entering UIUC with 50 or more credit hours and haven’t met the requirements listed below, please be aware that it will take you longer to graduate.

GPA

It is expected that applicants to this program will have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (A = 4.0). However, the average transfer GPA for admitted students is 3.86, with the middle 50% of GPAs ranging from 3.78 to 4.0.

Coursework

You must complete transfer coursework equivalent to the following University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign courses before the term you’re submitting your application. You’ll need to earn a B or better (3.0/4.0) in each required/technical course; you should repeat any courses in which you’ve earned a grade lower than a B before you apply. The most up-to-date course articulation information is available on Transferology.

  • CHEM 102 and CHEM 103, General Chemistry I and General Chemistry Lab I
  • CS 101, Intro Computing: Engineering & Science
    • or CS 124, Intro to Computer Science I
  • MATH 220, Calculus
    • or MATH 221, Calculus I
  • MATH 231, Calculus II
  • MATH 241, Calculus III
  • PHYS 211, University Physics: Mechanics
  • PHYS 212, University Physics: Electricity & Magnetism

The courses listed above are the minimum requirements for admission consideration. Schedule planning is important. Successful applicants will demonstrate course progression and rigor consistent with the suggested sequences for the major selected. This includes ensuring prerequisite courses are completed in the appropriate terms and taking a minimum number of technical courses (3-4) and credit hours (15+) each semester. Applicants should have all required coursework and at least one semester with 4 technical courses and 15+ credit hours completed prior to applying.

Admissions Recommendations

Coursework

Although it isn’t required that you do so in order to be admitted, we also recommend that you complete transfer coursework equivalent to the following University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign courses before or during the term you’re submitting your application:

  • MATH 285, Intro Differential Equations
    • or MATH 284, Intro Differential Systems
  • MATH 257, Linear Algebra with Computational Applications
    • or MATH 415, Applied Linear Algebra
    • or MATH 416, Abstract Linear Algebra
  • PHYS 213, University Physics: Thermal Physics
  • PHYS 214, University Physics: Quantum Physics

Skills

Familiarity with Python is recommended.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate all students are required to complete at least 45 semester hours of credit at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. At least 21 of these credit hours must be at the 300 or 400 level.

Program Tracks

After transferring, you will declare a track within the major. Current options include Astrophysics, Business, Computational Physics, Nuclear Physics, or Graduate Study. Students may also devise an alternative, custom track with a set of courses approved by the department.

General Education Courses

Included in our graduation requirements are general education (gen ed) courses. These classes allow you to gain and use broad knowledge beyond the specialized learning you’ll do through your major. Learn more about our general education requirements. You may be able to use Transferology to find gen ed courses that will transfer over from your institution to Illinois.

Applicants are also encouraged to make progress on the following general education courses when possible:

  • Language Other Than English
  • Composition I
  • Humanities & the Arts (6 hours)
  • Social & Behavioral Sciences (6 hours)
  • Cultural Studies

Language Other than English

Although this program doesn’t require you to complete our language graduation requirement for admission, we strongly encourage you do so before transferring.
