Admissions Requirements
This program is available for fall admission only. It is highly competitive due to space constraints.
GPA
For Spring 2025 applicants, it is expected that applicants to this program will have a minimum GPA of 2.75 (A = 4.0).
For Fall 2025 and future term applicants, it is expected that applicants to this program will have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (A = 4.0). A 3.25 GPA or higher is highly recommended.
Language Other than English
For admission to this program, you must have completed either three levels of one language other than English in high school or through the second level (two semesters) of one language other than English in college prior to application submission. If the 2nd level is in progress at the time of application, the course requirement will be considered incomplete.

Coursework
For admission to this program, you must complete transfer coursework equivalent to the following University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign courses before or during the term you’re submitting your application:
- Quantitative Reasoning I general education equivalent course must be completed prior to application submission. if in progress upon application submission, the course requirement will be considered incomplete.
- Transfer coursework equivalent to Illinois general education courses
- EPOL 201, Foundations of Education (program-approved equivalent)
- EPSY 201, Educational Psychology
- or PSYC 216, Child Psych
- or HDFS 105, Intro to Human Development
- PSYC 100, Intro Psychology
- or PSYC 103, Intro Experimental Psychology
This program has a five-semester professional education sequence beginning in the spring semester. You must successfully complete all degree requirements outside of professional education coursework to proceed to the professional education sequence. In the preceding fall semester, you must complete program-specific courses SPED 117, KIN 262, and SHS 320, which leaves room for two to three additional gen ed courses.
Teacher Education Licensure
This program leads to teacher licensure in the state of Illinois. Learn more about the Illinois State Board of Education requirements for teacher licensure.
Hours Verification
As part of the admission process, you’re required to have a minimum of 50 hours of experience with students with disabilities. This must be documented on our Special Education Hours Verification form. Please read the form carefully and completely before submitting it to our Admissions/Records Officer.

We also highly recommend that you meet the following criteria before transferring into this program, although it isn’t required that you do so in order to be admitted.
GPA
It is highly recommended that applicants to this program have a GPA of 3.25(A = 4.0).
Graduation Requirements
To graduate, all students are required to complete at least 45 semester hours of credit at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. At least 21 of these credit hours must be at the 300 or 400 level.
General Education Courses
Included in our graduation requirements are general education (gen ed) courses. These classes allow you to gain and use broad knowledge beyond the specialized learning you’ll do through your major. Learn more about our general education requirements. You may be able to use Transferology to find gen ed courses that will transfer over from your institution to UIUC.
